Compare the constraints by use
Warehouses and distribution
Start with the rack aisles, dock positions and underside clearances. Compare a clear-span portal frame against an interior-column scheme on rack positions and traffic paths. The interior posts may simplify the structural scheme while costing useful storage area. For a worked comparison, suppose the rack planner requires 24 m clear span and 8 m eave height. Compare an unobstructed 24 m bay with a two-bay 12 m layout using the same floor area. Record the clear aisle width and number of rack rows each layout leaves usable. These dimensions are illustrative. Ask each bidder for the proposed bracing bays and compare its effect on doors before accepting a layout.
Check the roof assembly U-value and the continuity of insulation at the eaves. Panel-center data do not capture thermal bridges at girts or through-fasteners.
Workshops and fabrication
Specify crane span and service class with the load information from the equipment vendor. Ask the frame supplier to identify runway support, longitudinal restraint and the point where loads pass to the foundation. Use the anchor setting drawing to confirm which parts arrive in the shipment and which are by the local concrete contractor.
Shop welding and field bolting shift work between factory and site. Compare fit-up inspection, transport length, site lifting and the means of verifying bolt pretension for the selected connection.
Hangars and service bays
Report the clear door width and height with tracks and drives fitted, and ask where wind reactions go when the door is closed. Confirm the surrounding frame movement limits with the door supplier. A frame optimized for steel weight may leave the door system with tolerances it cannot accommodate.
Evaluate roof and wall fire separation at the assembled-system level. Rock wool, PIR and EPS can have different weight, thermal and fire properties. Ask for the tested assembly and check which joints and openings fall within its scope.
Industrial additions and halls
Survey the existing foundation line and eave geometry before asking for an attached structure. A separate movement joint can simplify the interface but may affect weather sealing. An attached bay requires verified reactions and movement assumptions for the existing steel.
Document wind speed basis, ground snow load, seismic criteria and exposure before comparing final bids. The authority and engineer for the project decide which requirements apply, including any occupancy change.
